Microwave repair for built-in and countertop models
Microwaves are the one appliance where we strongly discourage do-it-yourself repair: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. We diagnose safely and tell you honestly when repair isn't worth the cost.

Microwave not heating? Common problems we fix
Runs but doesn't heat
The high-voltage parts are the usual suspects: a failed diode, capacitor, magnetron or transformer. Because those parts are expensive relative to the microwave, the diagnosis decides whether repair makes sense.
Sparks or arcing inside
A damaged waveguide cover, food splatter burned onto surfaces or a chipped interior paint layer can cause arcing. Stop using the microwave until it has been inspected.
Turntable doesn't turn, or light and fan fail
A worn turntable motor, coupler or roller ring, a burned-out lamp or a failed fan motor are inexpensive fixes. Over-the-range models add a vent fan that can fail independently.
Dead display, buttons don't respond or door won't latch
A failed control board, a door switch that no longer registers or a broken latch cause these. Door interlock switches are safety devices and should be replaced, not bypassed.
Microwave problems and likely causes
| Problem | Likely causes | Try first |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but doesn't heat | Diode, capacitor, magnetron, door switch | Stop using it |
| Sparks inside | Damaged waveguide cover, metal, chipped paint | Remove any metal, then stop using it |
| Turntable won't turn | Motor, coupler, roller ring | Reseat the plate and ring |
| Dead display | Control board, fuse, power surge | Check the outlet and breaker |
| Won't start with the door shut | Door switch, latch | Make sure the door closes fully |
| Vent fan or light out (over-the-range) | Fan motor, bulb | Replace the bulb |
Microwave types we repair
Over-the-range, built-in or countertop, we repair it.
- Over-the-range microwaves
- Built-in microwaves
- Microwave drawers
- Convection microwaves
- Wall oven and microwave combos
- Countertop microwaves
What happens on a microwave repair visit
We test the door switches first, since a bad switch stops heating. Then we safely discharge the capacitor before we test the high-voltage parts.
Switches, turntable motors, fans and bulbs are quick fixes. On a basic countertop unit, a high-voltage repair can cost more than a new one, and we'll tell you before any work.
What we check
- Test the door switches and interlock chain first, since a bad switch blocks heating.
- Measure high-voltage components with the unit unplugged and the capacitor discharged.
- Inspect the waveguide cover, interior cavity and door seals for damage.
- Check the control board, keypad and display connections.
- On over-the-range models, test the vent fan, lamp and mounting.
These are the repairs most often needed for this kind of appliance:
- Door switch or latch replacement
- Turntable motor or coupler replacement
- Fuse, diode or capacitor replacement
- Control board or keypad replacement
We confirm the exact repair after we diagnose it. If the part is on hand, we can usually finish in one visit.
Older or specialty parts sometimes have to be ordered. A diagnostic / service-call fee applies.
How power surges damage microwaves
Microwaves are less affected by climate than refrigerators or dryers. Summer power surges are the main local hazard, since they can damage the control board. Using a surge-protected outlet helps.
Quick microwave checks before you call
- Never open the case. The capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the microwave is unplugged.
- Stop using it if you see sparks, smell burning or the door doesn't close fully.
- Clean splatter from the cavity and waveguide area with a damp cloth.
- Don't run it empty.
Is your microwave worth repairing?
Microwaves commonly last about 7 to 10 years. Repairs like a door switch, turntable motor or fan are fine on a good over-the-range unit. On a basic countertop microwave, a high-voltage repair often costs more than a new one, and we'll tell you that up front.

Microwave repair FAQs
Is it worth repairing a countertop microwave?
Usually only for inexpensive faults such as a door switch, fuse or turntable motor. High-voltage repairs often cost more than a replacement.
Why does my microwave spark?
Metal, foil, chipped paint in the cavity or a damaged waveguide cover. Stop using it and have it inspected.
How long does a microwave repair take?
Most switch, fan and turntable repairs take under an hour.
Is it safe to fix a microwave myself?
We don't recommend it. The capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when the microwave is unplugged.
Do you repair microwave drawers?
Yes, along with over-the-range, built-in and convection models.
Why does my microwave run but not heat?
A failed door switch or a high-voltage part, like the diode or magnetron. Stop using it until it's checked.
Is there a diagnostic fee?
Yes, a diagnostic / service-call fee applies. Ask for the current fee when you schedule.
